Hanging on the headboard on my side of the bed is a Santa hat similar to the grinches’ here, except, mine has “Bah Humbug” inscribed on it. My wife gave me that. It fits both my head and my personal feelings about Christmas – well, what we’ve done to the holiday anyway.
I find it ironic that you can go to the mall and amidst school choirs singing different renditions of “Joy to the World” there are frantic people scurrying about with maxed out credit cards buying another trinket to say, “I Love You.” I find it ironic to see their expressions while engaged in the process of getting ready to celebrate this “Joy to the World” holiday. They resemble the grinch here as well as I.
There is a line in the cantata that we are doing this year that says, “I hardly feel like the good husband. The ‘in-over-my-head-husband.’ is more like it. Every time I hear the cash register ring I just cringe. I suppose I feel more like the ‘we’re-already-so-far-in-debt-that-what-does-it-even-matter-anymore’ husband.” That line works in that cantata because the writer knew their are thousands of people who identify with that predicament.
What’s it going to take to transform the heart that is “two sizes too small” into the “How Great Our Joy!” heart. Well, on that I am still working, but this I know for sure. It will be a God honoring thing and we will explore what that is Sunday.
